At the beginning of the 20th century, Hans Erlwein designed the Neuer Schlachthof in the west of the old part of Dresden. It has since been converted to an exhibition centre and, together with a new sports complex, it continues to dominate the local landscape. A new neighbour is the sports school centre designed by the architects Meyer and Bassin. The new building and six listed buildings designed by Erlwein now house a sports grammar school, sports secondary school and a boarding school.

The large dimensions of the existing buildings influenced the design of the new addition. The architects also designed the front and side facades to reflect this grand scale. Frames made of fibre cement panels form the upper floors into two-storey units. The rear facades facing the inner courtyard feature no projections or recesses, but gain horizontal structure through a solar screen. The courtyard itself offers access to the multi-storey entrance hall that connects the three main parts of the building: the north wing (containing rooms for teachers and administrators, as well as the viewing area for the adjoining sports hall), the west wing (which houses the canteen and classrooms for the secondary school) and the east wing (classrooms for specialist subjects and the grammar school). The corridors and classrooms gain a further touch of style through their green and grey flooring, which use robust and low maintenance DLW Linoleum Colorette. A library sits at the southern end of the east wing, forming a two-storey projecting cube with vertical panels to control sunlight.

Accommodation for 100 boarding school pupils is located in the older, renovated buildings. It’s a change of use that would certainly have pleased Hans Erlwein. He was a planning councillor and a member of a committee working to improve the Dresden tertiary education system.

1 The U-shaped building with the canteen surrounds the spacious break court.
2 Vertical louvers in front of the large windows protect the library from direct insolation yet allow a view of the outside.
3 In the hallway, the ceiling luminaires mark the zone belonging to the respective classrooms.
