192-square-meter linoleum print for Uganda

Children soldiers and Uganda are inextricably linked in the minds of many. That is understandable since that country was plagued by civil war for many years. For the time being, there is a ceasefire. However, aid is urgently needed – especially for children. This is exactly where the Uganda Direct Project comes in. German young people are mobilizing for young people in Uganda. The Roller campaign will create Germany’s largest linoleum print. In each German state, school classes are designing 1-square-meter-sized linoleum prints for 12 companies. Armstrong has supported the project from the very beginning and provides a lot of DLW linoleum.

The Youth to Youth campaign of the German World Population Foundation should raise about 100,000 euros as direct aid to the children and young people in Uganda. Companies each buy one square meter of linoleum print stock and invite the students to visit their companies. With these impressions in mind, the young artists create their designs. On 18 February 2010, a group from Syke High School visited Armstrong’s Delmenhorst plant. As they toured the plant, they were able to see first-hand how DLW linoleum is made.

Once complete, the 12 prints will show a cross-section of the economy of the particular German federal state. The works of art will be completed in festive fashion with a giant steamroller at a “printing event”. Invited guests will come from the areas of the economics, politics and culture and will include the patron, the state’s current minister president, who will also receive the entire 12-square-meter work of art.

The project not only benefits the children of Uganda. In the spirit of Youth to Youth, German young people learn about the conditions and life in Uganda. They delve intensively into a commercial enterprise and artistically express their impressions.

Linoleum block printing:

Artists discovered early on that linoleum carving was an alternative to wood carving because linoleum is much easier to work with than wood. Linoleum printing is primarily used for illustrations, posters and graphic art. Famous works of linoleum print art have come from artists such as Kandinsky, Matisse and Picasso. Linoleum carving entails cutting a negative relief into the linoleum with special knives. Ink is then rolled onto this printing plate with a brayer. After that, the plate is pressed onto a sheet of paper, whereby the ink is transferred to the paper. A linoleum plate can be used many times, each time creating an individual work of art by using different presses or inks.
